Visit from Drogheda young people

As part of the Setanta Sports Cup's innovative, popular and successful cross border exchange programme, Linfield played host to a group of Drogheda young people prior to Monday night's 0-0 draw at Windsor Park.

The young people were met at Windsor Park at 1pm by Jim McMinn, David Wilson,Sammy McClurg and community officers from a local PSNI station and accompanied to W5 in the city centre.Sponsorship had been obtained to permit entry to this attraction.

From there the group went to Belfast City Hall where they were welcomed by the Lord Mayor, Councillor Pat McCarthy. Andy Conn thanked the mayor for his welcome and the various gifts for the visitors. The group were then taken on a tour of the magnificent City Hall building and after a brief coach tour of some of Belfast's famous landmarks, the young people arrived at Windsor Park around 5.30pm.

They were then given a tour of the stadium and they then met up with around 40 Junior Blues members in the Clean Sweep lounge to enjoy a pre-match meal and recall how they had met in Drogheda a few weeks earlier. There were several presentations at the welcome event and the assistance of the Linfield Superstore, Michael Boyd of the IFA, Philip Mitchell of Umbro, the PSNI, W5 and Belfast City Council, as well as Jim and Paula McMinn, Jim Griffin and Drogheda United's Terry Collins in the arranging of this reception was much appreciated.

Before leaving the lounge each young person was presented with a goodie bag and the feedback from the Drogheda party was that they had very much enjoyed their day in Belfast.

Prior to the kick off in Monday's Setanta Cup game, both sets of young people went on to the pitch to do a Champions league style handshake in front of the supporters in each of the stands.
